Imaging in the beginning

A Rectigroph machine from the early 1930's

Most of us take it for granted, when we want a copy of an item, we just find the nearest office copier and away we go… we can print a clear image – as many as we need or want in either black and white or colour.

In the “olden days” copies could be made by using carbon paper or having the document sent out for copying by a company that would have a Photostat or Rectigraph machine. Copies would be returned with in a 24 to 48 hour time frame.

Thinking there needed to be a better way, patent attorney and part time researcher and inventor, Chester Carlson intended to create a copier. He studied the principals of photoconductivity and used to conduct experiments from his kitchen apartment. After several attempts and contracting an assistant, his experiments were often met with little progress. In 1938, he applied for a patent when he successfully transferred the image of a ruler onto paper. He then wrote the numbers “10-22-38 Astoria” on a sheet of paper and the second copy was created.

Excited in the possibilities of this invention, he was turned down more than 20 times by companies including IBM and General Electric. The Battelle Memorial Institute out of Columbus, Ohio contracted Carlson to refine his new process in 1944. Over the next five years, the non-profit organization worked with Carlson to refine the process and the first “xerograph” machine was put into production. The Xerox brand was trademarked and the Model A was a hit.

In the 1950’s the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) introduced the “Electrofax” and the Savion Corporation developed a solid line of liquid toner copiers during the 1960s to 1980s.  The RICOH  brand was born under this enterprising corporation and has become leaders in the digital imaging business.

Milne Office Systems is proud to be part of the RICOH network. In today’s world, the product line has grown to accommodate everyone’s copier needs. The technology has expanded to offering some of the most advanced solutions in document flow management.

I think Mr. Carslon would have been pleased to see how his invention has taken over the world.
